How to Deal with Difficult Clients for Small Business Owners, Entrepreneurs, WAHMs
If you are a small business owner or self-employed then you have probably had a difficult client at one time or another that has made you cringe any time you’ve seen their phone number come up on your display or had one of their emails land in your inbox. And, if you haven’t yet had any difficult clients, then maybe you are imagining that your next sales conversation is going to be a tricky one because, the other person has a very strong (or maybe negative) personality.
Today we are going to tap on those emotions that come up and the anticipatory fear that this difficult client is going to tear a strip off of you when you connect with them. So, focus on that person right now and see if you can generate the feeling you get whenever you have an interaction with them.
Even though I have this difficult client, they are demanding and unreasonable, I deeply and completely accept myself.
Even though this client can get really angry at times and it makes me uncomfortable because I can’t return the favour and blow up at them, I deeply and completely accept myself.
Even though this client’s demands are often unreasonable and maybe even impossible to meet, I choose to accept and honour all my feelings about them.
This difficult client…so unreasonable…so unfair…I don’t deserve the treatment I get from them…I wish I could just fire them…but in my present situation maybe I can’t…they really piss me off…
And I wish I could just fire back at them all the venom they throw at me…but I can’t…that wouldn’t be wise…for a number of reasons…so I choose to let go of my frustrations with them…all I can do is control my reaction to them…and most people like them just want to be heard…
So I choose to let them blow off their steam…and then calmly respond with a solution…the best solution I can offer… because often that’s all they want…is to be heard and acknowledged…and I choose not to go on the defensive…because that never works…
The customer may not be right…but they want to believe they are right…and it’s not about me personally…I just happen to be the target sometimes…and maybe my anxiety and resentment causes this customer to react in this way…so I choose to feel calm and relaxed…with an impenetrable bubble around me
So that I am not hurt in the process…because it’s not about me…it’s totally about them…and my reaction to their behaviour…I choose to feel calm and relaxed…as I interact with this customer and to not take anything personally…and be of service as best as I can

I’ve done this in my sales career a few times over the years and difficult clients were soon no longer difficult and in some cases became my best client.
